Dhaka: Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced today that the government is actively working to reinforce democratic institutions, rejuvenate the economy, and enhance the living standards of the citizens. Speaking at the Bengal Delta Conference 2026, held at a city hotel, Alamgir emphasized the administration's commitment to transforming Bangladesh into a democratic, inclusive, and exploitation-free nation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the conference was organized by the Dhaka Institute of Research and Analytics (DAIRA) under the theme: 'Bangladesh and a Changing World: Uncharted Times, Emerging Orders, and the Politics of Care'. During his address, Mirza Fakhrul highlighted the critical juncture Bangladesh currently faces due to the student-people's movement and the momentum for democratic restoration, which have opened up new possibilities for political change in the country.
Mirza Fakhrul paid tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters of the 1971 Liberation War, acknowledging their sacrifices for the nation's independence. He also honored the students and individuals who lost their lives during the 2024 movement aimed at restoring democracy in Bangladesh.
Describing himself as a grassroots political activist rather than a professional analyst, the minister reflected on his extensive political career and his involvement in movements against dictatorship. He spoke about the current economic challenges Bangladesh faces, citing global conflicts and economic instability, including tensions between Iran and the United States and the Russia-Ukraine war, as significant hurdles for developing nations.
Despite these challenges, Fakhrul expressed optimism about Bangladesh's path to recovery, emphasizing the government's initiatives to restructure the economy, increase investment, generate employment, and strengthen the banking sector. Various development programs have been launched to enhance the rural economy, with special emphasis on industrial development, agricultural advancement, and creative economy growth.
The minister also addressed democratic reforms, noting efforts to build a consensus on constitutional changes through dialogue with political parties. He underscored the importance of strong institutions for sustainable democracy and highlighted the role of regional cooperation and international engagement in Bangladesh's economic development.
Mirza Fakhrul concluded with a hopeful vision for Bangladesh's future, driven by the courage, unity, and resilience of its people, where everyone can enjoy a better, safer, and more dignified life. The conference saw participation from local and foreign researchers, policymakers, diplomats, development experts, business leaders, and civil society representatives.
