Dhaka: Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman today distributed prizes among the 10 winners of the "Bangla QR Reels Making Competition" at a ceremony held at the central bank's headquarters in the city. Speaking as the chief guest, the governor announced that the use of Bangla QR has been made mandatory for transactions starting July 1, 2026. This initiative marks a significant step towards the expansion of digital payments across the country, as stated in a press release.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the governor emphasized that this move would mitigate the risks associated with carrying cash, making financial transactions more accessible, faster, and secure. Additionally, it would relieve users from the challenges posed by counterfeit, torn, or damaged currency notes. Governor Rahman highlighted the global trend of utilizing digital technologies for financial transactions and expressed optimism that Bangladesh would continue to embrace even more advanced technologies in the future.
Bangladesh Bank has directed all banks and Mobile Financial Services (MFS) providers to ensure the adoption of Bangla QR by their customers. The central bank organized the reels-making competition to foster public awareness and encourage the everyday use of Bangla QR in financial transactions.
The event was attended by Deputy Governors of Bangladesh Bank, the head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), executive directors, directors, and other senior officials. The programme concluded with a photo session featuring the winners alongside Bangladesh Bank officials.
