Dhaka: Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan today highlighted the pivotal role of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in shaping Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty, multi-party democracy, and post-liberation war reconstruction. He made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion organized by Muktijoddha Sangsad at its auditorium in Mogbazar, commemorating the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Azam Khan emphasized Ziaur Rahman’s significant contributions during the early stages of the Liberation War, providing leadership and direction at critical moments. He noted that during the ‘Teliapara Sommelon’, Ziaur Rahman’s proposal led to the naming of the war as the ‘Muktijuddha (Liberation War)’ and the introduction of a sector-based command structure, which was crucial in organizing the resistance.
The minister elaborated on how Ziaur Rahman, after assuming state power, restored democratic order by transitioning from military rule to a multi-party political system. He reopened political space for previously banned parties and strengthened judicial independence through the establishment of the Supreme Judicial Council.
Azam Khan described Ziaur Rahman as a statesman who maintained a modest lifestyle and stayed connected with the people. He highlighted Ziaur Rahman’s belief in rural development and production growth as foundations for national progress. The minister further noted that Ziaur Rahman’s ideals continue to be relevant for Bangladesh’s development, democracy, and national unity.
He also mentioned the current government’s efforts in implementing welfare programs for freedom fighters, including the infrastructural development of Muktijoddha Sangsad and plans to construct a 20-storey building. Speakers at the event prayed for the eternal peace of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and called for national unity inspired by his ideals.
