Dhaka: A team from Adabor Police Station has arrested nine members of an alleged kidnapping gang involved in abductions in the Mohammadpur and Shyamoli areas and extortion of ransom.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrestees are Jahid Hossain, Hossain Ahammed alias Sifat, Yasin alias Ajmain, Ariful Islam, Mahim Chowdhury Akash, Sakib, Sohel Rana, Md Naim, and Md Martuza Tamim. A release from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed the arrests.

Quoting Adabor Police Station sources, the release detailed an incident on June 2 at around 11:00 am, when Sadman Sakib, 27, was abducted by the gang upon reaching Shyamoli Bus Stand. The abductors took him to a narrow alley behind a nearby Bata showroom, where they took his money and mobile phone. Under threat, they forced him to call his family to demand an additional Taka 50,000.

When Sakib resisted, the gang began to beat him. The presence of patrolling police prompted the abductors to attempt an escape. Police, with assistance from local residents, managed to arrest Jahid Hossain, a key member of the gang.

Subsequent operations conducted by Adabor Police Station, based on information provided by Hossain and aided by technology, led to the arrest of the remaining gang members. Preliminary interrogation revealed that the gang had been active in areas such as Shyamoli intersection, Shyamoli Ring Road, and Shyamoli Housing, where they targeted pedestrians for abduction and ransom extortion.
