Dhaka: The government has given the green light to a proposal for the procurement of three liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes, spending Tk 2,372 crore, inclusive of all applicable taxes, to address the nation's increasing energy needs. This decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement during its meeting at the Secretariat, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division laid out the proposal, indicating that one LNG cargo will be sourced from BP Singapore Pte Ltd, while the remaining two will be acquired from TotalEnergies Gas and Power Ltd, UK. The delivery of these LNG cargoes is slated for three separate periods: June 26-27, June 30-July 1, and July 6-7, 2026.
The procurement process will follow the international request for quotation method as per Rule 105(3)(a) of the Public Procurement Rules 2025. The total approved expenditure for these LNG cargoes amounts to Tk 23,72,21,18,784. This initiative by the committee has been recommended for final approval to ensure a consistent supply of natural gas, thereby supporting the country's power generation and industrial operations.
In addition, the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement has also suggested the approval of a proposal to purchase two LNG cargoes from SOCAR Trading SA of Switzerland through a government-to-government (G2G) arrangement. As per the Energy and Mineral Resources Division's proposal, these two LNG cargoes will be procured through a direct purchase process on a short-term basis within this year. SOCAR Trading SA, Switzerland, was chosen as the preferred supplier, with the price set at JKM plus US$0.125 per MMBTU.
