New delhi: Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar today congratulated Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), describing it as a significant achievement.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Jaishankar posted a congratulatory message on his verified X account, stating: "Congratulations to FM Dr Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh on his election as President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly." Jaishankar also expressed optimism about future cooperation, indicating his eagerness to collaborate closely with Dr Khalilur to advance shared priorities and strengthen multilateral cooperation.
Foreign Minister Rahman was elected President of the 81st Session of the UNGA after defeating the candidate of Cyprus in a closely contested election held at the UN Headquarters in New York. Of the 190 votes cast in the secret ballot, Bangladesh secured 99 votes, while Cyprus received 91. This victory marks a diplomatic milestone for Bangladesh, reflecting the international community's confidence in the country's growing role in multilateral affairs.
Dr Khalilur is set to assume the presidency of the UNGA at the beginning of its 81st session in September this year.
