Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today urged city dwellers to be aware of waste removal in Dhaka city. “Yesterday, I visited the activities for the removal of sacrificial waste in the city. The city corporation cleaners have worked to a large extent and have cleaned various places, but there are still many places left. You (city dwellers) should keep the city clean from your own position,” he said.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the prime minister expressed his concern about the cleanliness of Dhaka’s roads compared to those in other countries. He remarked, “When you see pictures of other countries on this TV screen, where there are beautiful roads, clean roads, don’t you get a little jealous in your mind that why are our roads so dirty?” He emphasized that the cleanliness seen abroad is not solely the work of city cleaners but also the responsibility of the citizens who refrain from littering.
Prime Minister Rahman made these remarks while speaking at a food and clothes distribution programme at Jurain on the occasion of the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. He called upon people not to throw garbage indiscriminately and urged them to dispose of waste properly. He highlighted the significant impact of collective action, stating, “Think about it, if all the people here, thousands of us, each throw one kilogram of waste in one place, how much waste will there be? It will be 10,000 kilograms of garbage.”
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the challenging work of city cleaners, who endure harsh conditions while performing their duties. He encouraged everyone to contribute to maintaining a clean environment. “And a cleaner can clean a small area. So your children, yourself, your parents, and family members can also live in a clean and beautiful environment,” he added.
Tarique Rahman stressed that the responsibility of the country’s welfare does not lie with any single entity, but rather with all its citizens. “If this country has to be built, then each of us has to be aware. If this country has to be taken forward in a good way, each of us has to work hard,” he said. He concluded by urging everyone to take an oath on the martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman to work together for the nation’s betterment.
The event was attended by notable figures including Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, BNP Industrial Affairs Secretary Alhaj Salah Uddin Ahmed, and Dhaka South Member Secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin.
