Cumilla: Agriculture and Livestock Minister Amin Ur Rashid today stated that leather prices are influenced by international market conditions rather than domestic demand. He addressed reporters in response to a query following a discussion commemorating the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium in Cumilla.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rashid emphasized that the global economy is currently facing a level of instability. He noted that as people’s purchasing power has decreased, a significant number of consumers worldwide are opting for synthetic alternatives over leather products, impacting the international leather market.
“The world is like one family. Any economic crisis in one part of the world has an impact on other countries as well,” Rashid remarked, highlighting the interconnectedness of global economies.
The minister pointed out that a substantial portion of the leather produced in Bangladesh is exported. Thus, any decline in global demand and prices is inevitably mirrored in the domestic market. He stressed the importance of adapting to evolving international market conditions and focusing on expanding export markets to ensure the sustainability of Bangladesh’s leather industry.
Rezaul Kaiyum, president of Cumilla Adarsha Sadar Upazila BNP, presided over the discussion. District Council Administrator Haji Mostak Mia and Cumilla City Corporation Administrator Yousuf Molla participated as special guests. The event concluded with special prayers for the salvation of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman’s departed soul.
