Thakurgaon: LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasized the importance of preserving agricultural land amidst urbanization efforts. “Agricultural land is decreasing in Bangladesh, which is not good for the country. So we will try not to waste agricultural land unnecessarily,” he stated during his visit to the proposed sites for a public university in Thakurgaon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the BNP government has initiated plans to establish a university, medical college, engineering college, nursing college, and EPZ in Thakurgaon. The projects aim to utilize fallow land to avoid unnecessary agricultural land wastage. Fakhrul Islam expressed his initial support for the proposal to allocate 100 acres of land within Bhatarmari sugarcane mills of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila for the new university.
The minister reiterated his stance on minimizing the destruction of agricultural land and suggested learning from renowned global universities that are developing vertically. He also stressed that any irregularities or corruption in government development work will be opposed and managed through proper channels and regulations.
Present during the site inspection were Thakurgaon University’s newly appointed Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Israfil Shaheen, district administration officials, District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Poygam Ali, and officials from various government departments. Following the university site visit, Mirza Fakhrul also inspected several other development work sites in the district.
