Shailkupa: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman today asserted that judges in Bangladesh enjoy complete independence in their judicial functions. He emphasized that judges in the country can operate with greater autonomy compared to many other nations. However, he noted that a backlog of cases persists due to a shortage of judges and a limited number of lawyers capable of participating in trials.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister addressed these issues during a conversation with journalists at the Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex. He referenced a comment made by NCP lawmaker Hasnat Abdullah, suggesting that such a remark could be considered contempt of court. The minister emphasized the complete independence of the judiciary and pointed out that leaders from Abdullah’s party have been granted bail promptly after arrest, illustrating the judiciary’s impartiality.
The minister also addressed statements made by NCP leaders Hasnat Abdullah and Nasiruddin Patwary, labeling them as political. He defended the police’s role in a recent incident involving NCP activists in Jhenaidah, asserting that the judiciary handled the matter independently and without any lapse in responsibility.
Md Asaduzzaman attended a monthly coordination meeting at the Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex before speaking to journalists, reaffirming the judiciary’s autonomy and criticizing politically motivated comments aimed at creating confusion.
