Dhaka: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has rolled out a comprehensive plan to handle the sacrificial animal waste during Eid-ul-Azha, aiming to clear the waste within eight hours. Approximately 13,453 personnel and 2,117 vehicles are set to be deployed to ensure the cleanliness of the southern city area.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the workforce includes 6,553 DSCC staff, 4,700 personnel from PCSP, and an additional 2,200 cleaners specifically assigned to work at 11 cattle markets, as stated by DSCC Administrator and heroic freedom fighter Md. Abdus Salam. The main waste removal operation is scheduled to commence at 12 noon on Eid day, with a strong appeal to the residents to cooperate fully in achieving the quick cleanup target.

Md. Abdus Salam emphasized the importance of not disposing of sacrificial animal waste into drains or sewers, warning that such actions could spread germs and cause severe waterlogging, especially if it rains.

The DSCC’s Public Relations Officer, Md. Rashel Rahman, informed that Eid leave for the corporation’s waste management department staff has been cancelled to facilitate rapid waste removal. Extensive preparations are in place to transfer and dispose of sacrificial animal waste at the Matuail Sanitary Landfill. A goal has been set to remove 33,942 tonnes of waste over three days, with specific targets for each day.

Efforts are also focused on the 11 temporary cattle markets, with continuous cleaning operations planned. The phased removal of market waste is targeted at 60% on the first day, 30% on the second, and 10% on the third.

This year’s target for animal sacrifice in the south city area is 174,406 animals, with estimates suggesting that the majority will be sacrificed on the first day. To support the waste removal efforts, a variety of vehicles and equipment, including compactors, dump trucks, and bulldozers, will be utilized.

Additionally, 46 tonnes of bleaching powder, 210 gallons of Savlon, and 140,000 biodegradable bags will be distributed to aid the cleaning operations. The process will be monitored live from a central control room, with additional control rooms at each cattle market. Executive magistrates and medical teams will ensure law and order and animal health services, respectively.

Two hotline numbers have been activated to address citizen complaints regarding waste removal: 01709900888 and 02223386014. The DSCC has made arrangements for the quick resolution of such complaints throughout the three-day operation.

A supervisory panel, comprising high-ranking DSCC officials, has been formed to oversee the cattle markets and waste management operations. Staff leaves have been cancelled across various departments to ensure efficient execution of the Eid-ul-Azha cleanup efforts.
