Shilpakala Academy Concludes Nazrul 127th Birth Anniversary Programme

Dhaka: The three-day programme of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy marking the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam concluded in the capital. The closing ceremony of the national event titled “Droher Kobi, Praner Kobi” was held at the National Theatre Hall of the academy, featuring music, poetry, and dance performances based on the works of the National Poet.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury attended the programme as chief guest. He announced that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has declared the period from May 25, 2026, to May 25, 2027, as “Nazrul Year”. During this period, nationwide programmes will be held to highlight Nazrul’s life and works, particularly among the younger generation. He emphasized Kazi Nazrul Islam’s significant contributions across branches of music, including classical, Shyama Sangeet, kirtan, love songs, and revolutionary compositions.



The minister also mentioned efforts to promote the country’s cultural heritage, history, and traditions alongside the observance of Nazrul’s legacy. Cultural Affairs Secretary Kaniz Moula presided over the programme, while State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmood Khyom attended as a special guest. Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (JASAS) Convener Helal Khan was present as a guest. Shilpakala Academy Director General Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed delivered the welcome speech.



The programme featured group performances of Nazrul songs, poetry recitations, and dances by cultural organisations. It concluded with the staging of the play “Boner Meye Pakhi” by Banshri Repertory Theatre.
