Hathazari: Fisheries Department in a special drive seized 2300 meters of illegal fishing net from Halda River, country’s lone natural fish breeding ground. The predawn raid on Saturday covered the area from Nayahat to Goanmordon in the Haladar estuary of the Nazirhat Halda River in Hathazari upazila.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Md. Shoukat Ali, the Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer of Hathazari, reported that 12 fishing rods were also seized during the drive. The predawn operation was part of an ongoing effort to protect the vital ecosystem of the Halda River, which is crucial for the breeding of carp fish and supports a diverse range of aquatic life, including dolphins.
The confiscated nets have been deposited to a temporary naval police camp and will be destroyed later. Shoukat Ali emphasized the importance of continuous monitoring and operations to safeguard the natural breeding grounds. This initiative underscores the Fisheries Department’s commitment to preserving this unique aquatic habitat and preventing illegal activities that threaten the biodiversity of the region.
