London: Bangladesh has been unanimously elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Board of Governors for the 2026-28 term. This significant achievement marks another milestone in Bangladesh’s active engagement with international organisations since it joined the Commonwealth after gaining independence.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Commonwealth Executive Committee consists of 16 members, with eight being the highest contributing member states and the other eight elected from four regions. Bangladesh has been elected from the Asia-Europe region during the Commonwealth Board of Governors meeting held on May 20 at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday. Dr Nazrul Islam, the Acting Bangladesh High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, represented Bangladesh at this important meeting.
The Executive Committee plays a crucial role in overseeing financial, personnel, and administrative matters of the Commonwealth Secretariat. It is also responsible for making policy recommendations to the Commonwealth Board of Governors and scrutinising the membership of new and accredited organisations within the Commonwealth. Bangladesh’s unanimous election to this committee highlights its commitment, active participation, and leadership within the Commonwealth community.
