Tangail: Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anne announced today that a permanent embankment will be constructed on the Jamuna River in Tangail starting from the next fiscal year. This initiative aims to curb river erosion and protect the people affected in the area.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the announcement was made during a views-exchange meeting with erosion-hit residents, held on the grounds of Mintu Memorial High School near the riverbank. The minister stated that the construction of the embankment addresses a long-standing demand of the local population and serves the public interest by preventing further erosion by the Jamuna River.
Earlier in the day, Minister Anne visited several erosion-affected areas in Charpauli of Kakua union under Tangail Sadar upazila. He emphasized the severe impact of river erosion on local communities and outlined the government’s long-term plan to address this issue permanently.
The proposed embankment project, with an estimated cost of around Tk 50 crore, aims to protect erosion-prone areas along the river in Tangail. Minister Anne highlighted that the embankment’s construction would safeguard thousands of people from the threat of erosion and contribute to the region’s economic development.
In addition to alleviating the suffering of erosion-affected residents, the minister mentioned that various development projects, including road construction, would be implemented to improve the area overall. Necessary measures will be taken to ensure public interest is served effectively.
The event was attended by Tangail Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar, and Chief Engineer of the Central Region of Bangladesh Water Development Board Md Shahjahan Siraj, among others. Local public representatives, government officials, political leaders, and residents of erosion-affected areas were also present.
