Rajshahi: A two-day training workshop aimed at raising awareness about the Right to Information (RTI) Act and strengthening youths' practical skills in using the law was held in Rajshahi. The event brought together young participants eager to enhance their understanding and application of this crucial legislation.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the training was organized by the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) and took place on Wednesday and Thursday at a restaurant in the Shaheb Bazar area of the city. A total of 22 young men and women from eight districts of the Rajshahi Division participated in the program, reflecting a strong regional interest in the RTI framework.
At the opening session, BELA's Coordinator for Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, Tanmoy Kumar Sanyal, provided a detailed briefing to the participants about the RTI Act, including the application process and the responsibilities of the authorities involved. He emphasized the importance of using the RTI Act effectively to obtain information on public interest issues, as it can play a pivotal role in ensuring transparency and accountability in both government and non-government institutions.
BELA Programme and Field Coordinator AMM Mamun shared practical experiences of applying the RTI Act in various sectors such as environment, land, and water, highlighting the act's relevance to public interest issues. Deputy Director of the Rajshahi District Information Office, Nafeyala Nasrin, further elaborated on the national and international dimensions of the RTI framework, discussing its challenges and potential solutions.
The training also addressed challenges related to record-keeping and information delivery in government offices, along with barriers that citizens face in accessing information. Participants worked in groups to prepare and submit RTI applications, gaining valuable hands-on experience. Additionally, an educational skit performed by the trainees added a creative dimension to the learning process.
At the closing ceremony, RULFAO Executive Director Afzal Hossain reiterated the significance of the RTI Act as an effective tool for ensuring access to information. He stressed that its proper implementation can help establish transparency and accountability in the state, reduce corruption, and strengthen democratic practices. Hossain urged citizens to become more aware of their right to information, underscoring the collective responsibility to uphold these principles.
