Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has expressed the Election Commission's (EC) intent to conduct local government elections without bloodshed and in a fair manner. Speaking at an event organized by the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) at a local hotel, Nasir Uddin emphasized the importance of national unity among stakeholders to achieve this goal.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the CEC called for collective efforts to unite the nation in pursuit of peaceful elections. He announced that the EC plans to launch a comprehensive awareness campaign in collaboration with development partners and engage in discussions with various stakeholders. 'We want to mobilize all and make them united so that we can give a fair local government election avoiding such conflicts (violence),' said Nasir Uddin.
Regarding the previous general election held on February 12, Nasir Uddin mentioned that the election results for every constituency, including polling station-wise data, are available on the EC's website. This transparency allows anyone to verify the accuracy of the election results.
According to the EC, preparations are in progress for elections to 4,581 Union Parishads, 61 Zila Parishads, 495 Upazila Parishads, 330 municipalities, and 13 city corporations. As part of these preparations, the EC is updating the electoral code of conduct to align with current laws related to city corporations, municipalities, zila parishads, upazila parishads, and union parishads.
The local government elections will be scheduled based on a request from the Local Government Division. State Minister for LGRD Mir Shahe Alam has indicated that the phased elections are likely to commence after the monsoon season, beginning in September or October of this year.
