Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has assured the public that the government is taking all necessary measures to uphold law and order, ensure public safety, and meet the people's expectations for peace and security nationwide. "We are trying to do whatever is necessary to maintain law and order, ensure public safety, and fulfill public expectations for peace," he stated during a press briefing at the Home Ministry conference room.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister emphasized that law enforcement agencies are conducting continuous operations against crime, terrorism, extortion, drugs, and organized criminal activities. These efforts are complemented by long-term reforms within the police system. The Home Minister highlighted that proactive operations have been intensified, focusing on crime prevention through intelligence-driven anti-drug, anti-extortion, and anti-terror initiatives.
The minister detailed the government's recent achievements in various parts of the country, including Dhaka, Cox's Bazar, Ukhiya, and Teknaf, where significant arrests of listed and long-absconding accused individuals have been made. In particular, he mentioned the swift handling of the rape and murder case of eight-year-old schoolgirl Ramisa, promising a quick submission of the charge sheet to expedite the trial.
Ahmed noted that since assuming office, strict actions have been taken against heinous crimes, resulting in prompt arrests and thorough investigations. He highlighted the rapid arrest of prime accused Sohel and his wife, who were apprehended within 24 hours, with the accused already providing a confessional statement in court.
In recent police activities in the capital, special raids in areas such as Mohammadpur, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, and Adabar have led to the arrest of several professional criminals and wanted suspects. Operations in Jatrabari and Tejgaon areas also resulted in the arrest of dozens of individuals involved in various crimes.
Referring to several recent high-profile criminal cases, Ahmed praised the swift actions of law enforcement agencies in making arrests related to rape and murder cases across districts like Cumilla, Bogura, Kapasia, and Dhaka's Manda area. He reiterated the government's commitment to reforming the police system, acknowledging that while many changes require time, substantial steps have already been taken.
"The government is only around three months old. Reforming everything and preparing policies for future implementation takes time," Ahmed explained. Despite these limitations, he expressed hope that the public and media would recognize and appreciate the significant actions already undertaken by the government.
