Geneva: State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. M A Muhit is heading the Bangladesh delegation at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. In his statement, he emphasized the government's commitment to prioritizing health in national development.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Muhit highlighted that over 70 percent of healthcare expenses in Bangladesh are paid out-of-pocket by individuals, pushing many families into poverty. He noted the government's efforts to increase public health funding, improve primary healthcare services, establish an effective referral system, and introduce modern digitalization to address the situation.
The Bangladesh delegation, consisting of six members and led by Dr. Muhit, is participating in the assembly, recognized as a significant international health sector gathering. Dr. Muhit delivered the official statement of Bangladesh at the main session on May 19, as reported in a press release.
In addition to the main session, Dr. Muhit attended a policymaking meeting of the Global Vaccine Alliance, a side event of the World Health Assembly. He discussed the government's ongoing health reform agenda, highlighting initiatives to raise health awareness and promote healthier lifestyles.
Dr. Muhit expressed concern over the health impacts of climate change on Bangladesh, noting how it alters disease patterns and strains the country's healthcare system. He also mentioned the challenge posed by over 1.3 million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar on Bangladesh's healthcare infrastructure.
At the assembly, Dr. Muhit urged global leaders to establish an equitable 'Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing' system. He emphasized the efficient use of resources and the importance of strengthening international cooperation to combat non-communicable diseases and antimicrobial resistance. The assembly is scheduled to conclude on May 23.
