Khulna: The lone cattle market for sacrificial animals under the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) was officially opened this afternoon at the Joragate Bazar premises, in anticipation of the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha celebrations. KCC Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju inaugurated the market, serving as the chief guest for the event.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, several committees have been established to ensure the security and provision of necessary facilities for cattle traders coming from various regions. In his speech at the inauguration ceremony, Nazrul Islam Manju emphasized the city corporation's commitment to maintaining cleanliness and ensuring an adequate water supply at the market. Responsibilities have been distributed among dedicated committees to oversee different activities.
In response to public demand, Manju announced that the market toll (hasil) would remain unchanged from the previous year. He noted that the hasil rate had been reduced to 4 percent last year from 5 percent in 2024, expressing optimism that revenue collection would still increase and be deposited into the government treasury. The KCC administrator also commended the cooperation of political parties in managing the market and mentioned that the Khulna office of Bangladesh Bank had implemented measures to detect counterfeit currency notes.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by KCC Secretary and Convener of the Cattle Market Committee Razib Ahmed, with Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) Commissioner Khan Zahidul Hasan speaking as a special guest. According to the market organizing committee, the cattle market has been established in compliance with hygiene regulations, and no other cattle market will be permitted within the city area.
The market is equipped with modern management facilities, including round-the-clock CCTV surveillance, uninterrupted electricity supply, computerised hasil collection, and counterfeit currency detection arrangements under the supervision of Bangladesh Bank. Veterinary services will be available around the clock, along with clean restaurant facilities, modern public toilets, and 24-hour security supported by magistrates, police, and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel.
The chief guest formally inaugurated the market by releasing balloons and cutting a ribbon, followed by a prayer session (munajat).
