Dhaka: Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam has stated that the government is actively pursuing multiple initiatives to progress Bangladesh’s space, satellite, and drone technologies. He emphasized that these technologies are crucial infrastructures necessary for the nation’s advancement in disaster management, agriculture, fisheries, communication, and security.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Anam made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar entitled ‘Satellite, Drones and Future Space Technology in Bangladesh’ held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the capital. He outlined how satellite technology could facilitate disaster forecasting, monitor river erosion, boost agricultural output, enhance coastal security, and improve the safety of fishermen operating in deep-sea areas.

The minister highlighted that the government has already launched initiatives to swiftly communicate cyclone and adverse weather warnings to fishermen. On the subject of drone technology, he noted that drones are being increasingly utilized as sophisticated platforms for border security, agricultural management, surveying, and disaster response, moving beyond their conventional uses in photography and entertainment.

Anam further revealed that the government is planning to establish Low Earth Orbit (LEO)-based satellites in the future to gather more precise data and information. He advocated for collaborative efforts involving universities, research institutions, and stakeholders in the technology sector to broaden the application and usage of space data.

Dr. Imadur Rahman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL), delivered the keynote paper during the seminar.
