Shariatpur: A case has been filed concerning the assault on a doctor and the vandalism that occurred in the emergency department of Shariatpur Sadar Hospital following the death of a patient receiving treatment at the facility.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Dr. Akram Elahi from the hospital filed the complaint at Palang Model Police Station on Saturday evening. The case was filed against 11 named individuals and 50 unidentified persons. Officer-in-Charge Shah Alam confirmed that six of the accused have been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects. The arrested individuals include Solaiman Qazi alias Al-Amin, Jasim Qazi, Abdul Jalil Qazi, Rabiul Qazi, and Zayeda Begum.

The incident began when Lal Mia Kazi, a 50-year-old resident of the Uttar Bilashkhan area in Shariatpur municipality, was admitted to the hospital’s emergency department with chest pain around 10:00 pm on Friday. Despite receiving primary treatment, he passed away around 12:30 am on Saturday. The patient’s relatives, unhappy with the circumstances, alleged that the attending doctor arrived late, leading to a confrontation where they attacked and vandalized the emergency department.

During the incident, several individuals, including the on-duty doctor, Md Nasir Islam, and Ansar members Sohel Sardar, Kamrul, Azizul Haque, and Kawsar, sustained injuries. Nasir Islam, who suffered serious injuries, was later transported to Dhaka via air ambulance. CCTV footage from the hospital captured 20-25 individuals assaulting and dragging Nasir Islam out of the emergency room, causing widespread panic until police intervened to restore order.

Civil Surgeon Dr. Md Rehan Uddin announced the formation of a four-member investigation committee tasked with submitting its findings within five working days. Deputy Commissioner Tahsina Begum expressed concern over the incident, stating that strict measures will be taken against those responsible. Shariatpur-1 MP Sayeed Ahmed Aslam also condemned the attack, emphasizing that assaults on healthcare facilities are intolerable and that the perpetrators will face consequences.
