Dhaka: Jahangirnagar University: Students of Jahangirnagar University locked the university’s new administrative building on Sunday, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused in an attempted rape case and the resignation of the proctor. The protest began with students gathering in front of the building at 9:30 am, and by 11:00 am, they had locked both the main and inner gates, initiating a sit-in programme.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the protesters have vowed to maintain the blockade until their demands are met. Fahmida Moon, a student from the 52nd batch of the Urban and Regional Planning Department, emphasized that one of their six key demands includes the resignation of the entire proctorial body if the accused is not arrested within 48 hours. She expressed concerns over a series of negative incidents on campus since the current proctor took office.

Fahmida Moon further stated that the registrar building will remain locked until the authorities provide a timeline for the arrest of the accused. “We will continue our programme until the administration gives us a clear assurance,” she added.

Adrita Roy, a student from the 53rd batch of the Drama and Dramatics Department, criticized the university administration’s handling of the incident, citing a lack of responsibility and judgment in their response. The attempted rape occurred on May 12, when an unidentified man allegedly tried to assault a female student after dragging her into nearby bushes near the old Fazilatunnesa Hall and the extended part of Al Beruni Hall on campus.
