Dhaka: Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal has emphasized the pivotal role that parliament members can play in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Bangladesh. This statement came during a meeting with a delegation from the Citizens’ Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh, led by its convener Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, at the Deputy Speaker’s office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Barrister Kayser Kamal highlighted his longstanding commitment to advocating for minority communities, human rights, and marginalized groups, even before his tenure as a parliament member. He noted the significant support he received from the Garo and Hajong communities during the 13th parliamentary election, affirming his dedication to integrating these communities into the national mainstream to alleviate their challenges.

Kamal further articulated the importance of parliamentary caucuses within the Westminster governance framework, proposing the formation of a caucus focused on achieving the SDGs. He believes that such a group could be instrumental in fostering a humane and inclusive Bangladesh. Additionally, he commended the efforts of young parliamentarians in their continuous work towards developing the nation.

The delegation from the Citizens’ Platform shared their ongoing efforts in supporting the welfare of poor and marginalized communities, including ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities, in partnership with relevant stakeholders. They underscored the urgency of establishing an independent parliamentary caucus to further this cause.

Both parties at the meeting agreed on the importance of enhancing quality education, improving public services, ensuring good governance, and supporting minority communities. The meeting was attended by core group members of the Citizens’ Platform, including Professor Mustafizur Rahman, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Sanjeeb Drong, Hasin Jahan, Zakir Hossain, Ashrafun Nahar Mishti, and Tarannum Zinan.
