HSBC Highlights BSEZ’s Potential in Unlocking Bangladesh Investment Horizons

Dhaka: The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Limited in Bangladesh, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone (BSEZ), recently organised an event titled ‘Unlocking Bangladesh Investment Horizons: A Spotlight on Bangladesh Special Economic Zone’. The session convened policymakers, diplomats, regulators, investors, and business leaders, focusing on the evolving investment landscape of Bangladesh.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, speakers at the event discussed various facets of Bangladesh’s investment landscape, including sector readiness, infrastructure development, and policy direction. The discussions underscored the role and potential of BSEZ in the nation’s broader investment ecosystem. The programme began with opening remarks by Takahashi Junko, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Bangladesh Office, followed by an address from Md. Mahbub ur Rahman, CEO of HSBC Bangladesh.



A key feature of the event was a presentation titled ‘A Model Economic Zone: Showcasing BSEZ’, delivered by Chiharu Tagawa, Managing Director of Bangladesh SEZ Ltd. This presentation highlighted BSEZ’s strategic vision, infrastructure readiness, and investment opportunities. The event concluded with closing remarks by Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), and CEO of the Public Private Partnership Authority (PPA).



The session included an interactive Q and A, where participants engaged in discussions about Bangladesh’s investment outlook and the importance of collaboration between government authorities, development partners, and private sector stakeholders. The Q and A featured Chiharu Tagawa and Nahian Rahman Rochi, Executive Member and Head of Business Development at BIDA.



Takahashi Junko remarked on JICA’s role in fostering an environment conducive to private investment, expressing hope that the discussions would deepen understanding of BSEZ’s potential and encourage new partnerships. Chiharu Tagawa emphasized BSEZ’s role in accelerating industrial diversification and employment creation.



Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun highlighted the necessity of structured industrial growth and the centrality of Special Economic Zones to this shift. He praised the support from HSBC and BSEZ in bringing stakeholders together to discuss Bangladesh’s economic-zone opportunity. Md Mahbub ur Rahman noted the shift in the global investment landscape towards resilience, positioning Bangladesh at the forefront of international diversification strategies, with opportunities like BSEZ offering stable conditions for business growth and operation.
