Sylhet: Transport workers in the Sylhet Division have announced an indefinite work stoppage from 6 am on May 19, demanding the withdrawal of what they say are false cases filed against several leaders of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the federation's Sylhet divisional committee on Thursday night.
According to United News of Bangladesh, leaders stated that the cases were filed against divisional president Haji Moynul Islam, joint general secretary Ali Akbar Rajon, treasurer Abdus Shahid, and several other leaders. These cases were linked to the deaths of two transport workers during a clash between two groups at the Kadamtali bus terminal in Sylhet on April 27. The leaders claimed that the accused were not involved in the incident and called for a fair and impartial investigation into the deaths.
A murder case was subsequently filed with South Surma Police Station against 29 individuals, including the federation leaders. In response, the transport leaders urged workers across Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, and Habiganj to observe the strike to press home their demand.
