Dhaka: State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Chowdhury has emphasized the importance of responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creative industries and mass media. He highlighted that while AI opens up new opportunities globally, it also poses ethical risks and potential misuse that need to be addressed.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Yasser Khan Chowdhury underscored the government’s support for the judicious use of AI, ensuring that human values are maintained. He stressed that AI should be a supportive tool in enhancing creativity in films and mass media. These remarks were made during a workshop titled ‘Strategies to Prevent the Spread of Rumors and Misinformation Through the Use of AI Technology in Film and Advertisement Distribution and Marketing’ held at the National Institute of Mass Communication (NIMC).
The event was a collaborative effort between NIMC and the Bangladesh Cinema and Television Institute (BCTI). The state minister called for all stakeholders to adopt a responsible approach, ensuring AI becomes an instrument for positive innovation in film, media, and digital content creation.
BCTI Chief Executive Abul Kalam Mohammad Shamsuddin presided over the event, which also included the closing ceremony and certificate distribution for four courses conducted by BCTI. Other notable speakers, including Joint Secretary Dr. Md. Alam Mostafa and NIMC Additional Director General Rownak Jahan, addressed the gathering.
Jagannath University educator and filmmaker Labib Nazmus Sakib, in his keynote, highlighted AI technologies such as de-aging, virtual production, and voice cloning in filmmaking, discussing the emerging challenges related to authorship and censorship. He also pointed out AI’s impact on advertising, noting its dual role in enhancing promotional activities and raising concerns about data privacy and authenticity.
Speakers at the workshop expressed concern over the potential for AI to spread rumors and misinformation through deepfakes and AI-driven bots. However, they also emphasized the positive role AI can play in combating these threats through fact-checking tools and algorithmic detection systems. Veteran film director Rafiquzzaman remarked that the core strength of cinema lies in human emotion, advocating for cautious use of AI in mainstream filmmaking.
The workshop was attended by students from various BCTI courses and senior officials from the Ministry of Information.
