Investigation Underway into Measles Outbreak, Child Deaths: Health Secretary

Dhaka: Health Services Division Secretary Md Kamruzzaman Chowdhury today stated that investigations are underway into the ongoing measles outbreak in the country, the reasons behind the vaccine shortage, and the incidents of child deaths. He emphasized the government’s commitment to understanding the root causes of the outbreak and addressing the vaccine supply issues, which have raised significant public concern.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Health Secretary made these comments during a roundtable discussion titled “Measles Outbreak and the Way Forward” at Bangladesh Medical University in the city. The event was organized by the Bangladesh Health Reporters Forum and attended by key health professionals and representatives from international health organizations.



Md Kamruzzaman Chowdhury highlighted that the state holds responsibility for every death and that thorough investigations are essential. “The child deaths caused by measles are being investigated. You will be informed once the investigation report is completed,” he assured. He mentioned that the inquiry would assess any negligence by involved parties and clarify the reasons for the high number of child fatalities.



The roundtable featured a keynote presentation by Prof Dr. Mirza Ziaul Islam, Head of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute. Representatives from UNICEF and the World Health Organization were also present, emphasizing the international attention and collaboration in addressing the measles crisis in the country.
