Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today stated that the current government does not aim to control the media but seeks to establish it within a fair and independent framework. "In the modern world, no state can remain outside the flow of information and accountability. Therefore, forming an independent and consensus-based 'Media Commission' that protects the mutual interests of all stakeholders has become the demand of the time," he remarked during the inauguration ceremony of the 'International Cable TV, Broadcasting, and Communication Expo 2026' at the International Convention City Bashundhara.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the exhibition was organized by the Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB). The minister emphasized that the government assumed office through a transparent election, with no questions raised domestically or internationally. This democratic mandate, he noted, keeps the government accountable to the people. "We understand that the power of communication and digital platforms has now become so strong that the state cannot control everything even if it wants to," he added.
Swapon stressed the significance of forming a commission for the media industry, highlighting that ensuring media independence and establishing a strong commission are key priorities for the government. He clarified that the government does not intend to impose its agenda or authority within this ecosystem but aims to act as a 'facilitator' and partner. He further stated, "In civilized countries, these matters are managed not by the Ministry of Information, but through independent commissions. We are also moving in that direction."
The minister underscored the necessity of digital mechanisms, pointing out the lack of accurate statistics regarding newspaper circulation or television viewership. He opined that sound decisions cannot be made based on assumed information and explained the government's approach: conducting joint studies, collecting digital data, and formulating a new roadmap or policy. This approach aims to bring transparency in determining advertisement rates and revenue collection.
Addressing the risks posed by the digital world, the minister warned that personal privacy is now under threat due to technological advancements. He urged for the establishment of a unified forum or understanding globally to mitigate these risks. Swapon called on stakeholders to make 'knowledge investments' to better comprehend the emerging digital ecosystem.
The programme was chaired by COAB President A B M Saiful Hossain Sohel, with notable guests such as Anjan Chowdhury Pintu, President of the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO), COAB General Secretary Syed Mosharraf Ali Chanchal, Expo Convener Nizam Uddin Masud, and senior personnel from the broadcasting industry in attendance.
