Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced a strategic decision to gradually withdraw the army from field-level law enforcement duties, citing an improvement in the country's overall law and order situation. During a press briefing following a meeting on stone quarry management at the Bangladesh Secretariat, Ahmed emphasized the government's confidence in the police force's restored discipline and the public's increased trust in them.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Minister highlighted that the army's continuous deployment for law enforcement is not feasible following the establishment of an elected political government. He assured that the withdrawal process would occur in phases, ensuring coordination between the police, army, and other relevant agencies. Ahmed addressed ongoing anti-crime efforts, noting that operations against extortionists, drug traders, terrorists, illegal gamblers, and armed criminals are actively being conducted nationwide.
Ahmed reiterated that no one is above the law, emphasizing that law enforcement agencies are executing operations based on carefully prepared lists. "Joint operations are underway in some areas, while single-agency operations are also being conducted," he mentioned. While acknowledging differing opinions, the minister expressed confidence in the noticeable improvement in the country's law and order situation.
