Dhaka: The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced a special drive against damaged, risky, and unserviceable vehicles operating beyond their economic lifespan in the capital.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the DMP issued a public notice highlighting the persistent issue of unfit buses plying across the city. These vehicles frequently break down on roads, flyovers, and bridges, causing traffic congestion and posing risks to road safety.

The notice specifies that the economic lifespan for buses and minibuses is 20 years, while trucks, covered vans, and other freight vehicles have a limit of 25 years, based on guidelines from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).

The DMP has warned that strict legal action, including fines, vehicle impoundment, and dumping of unfit vehicles, will be enforced against violators. The operation will be conducted in coordination with Special Metropolitan Magistrates and traffic police.

The police authority has urged vehicle owners, drivers, and transport stakeholders to adhere to regulations and has sought public cooperation to ensure safe and smooth movement in the city.
