Magura: Nitai Roy Chowdhury, the esteemed Cultural Affairs Minister, has had a storied career in both legal and political arenas, making substantial contributions to his community and country. Born on January 7, 1949, in Hatbaria village, Magura district, he spent his formative years in his native village and went on to achieve academic excellence.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nitai Roy Chowdhury completed his secondary education at Alokdia Pukhuria High School and pursued higher secondary studies at Magura Government College. He later earned M.A. and LL.B. degrees from the University of Dhaka, which paved the way for his legal career. During his university years, he was actively involved in student politics, serving as General Secretary and later President of the Biplobi Chhatra Union.
Chowdhury’s political journey began in earnest when he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Magura-2 constituency in 1988. He quickly rose through the ranks, holding positions such as State Minister for Law, Youth and Sports, and Education. His leadership extended to the local level, where he served as Chairman of the Magura District Council.
Currently, Chowdhury is the Vice Chairman of the BNP and a Member of Parliament from the Magura-2 constituency, having assumed the role of Cultural Affairs Minister in 2026. His legal expertise and commitment to justice have been highly regarded throughout his parliamentary tenure.
Beyond his political and legal careers, Chowdhury has been a staunch advocate for social development, public service, educational access, and infrastructure development. Over the past four decades, he has remained deeply involved in public welfare, earning a reputation as a dedicated public leader.
In his personal life, Chowdhury is married to Jhumur Roy Chowdhury and is a father to five children. His daughter, Nipun Roy Chowdhury, serves in the BNP’s Central Executive Committee and as a Member of Parliament. His son, Debashish Roy Chowdhury, holds a position as a Justice at the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, while his other son, Mithun Roy Chowdhury, is actively involved in BNP activities in Magura.
