Dhaka: A delegation of the UNESCO, led by its Head of Office and Representative to Bangladesh Dr. Susan Vize, today made a courtesy call on Deputy Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Barrister Kayser Kamal at his office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, during the meeting, the Deputy Speaker emphasized that freedom of expression is recognized as a fundamental right in the Constitution of Bangladesh. However, he pointed out that the deliberate spread of misinformation and disinformation on social media to create social disorder does not fall within the ambit of this right.

Kayser Kamal highlighted the need for training programmes involving Members of Parliament and relevant stakeholders on this issue. He also noted that children in Bangladesh are benefiting significantly from UNESCO’s programmes in education, culture, and information technology. He stressed the necessity of raising public awareness about cybercrime and cyber security laws, as stated in a press release.

The UNESCO delegation expressed their commitment to continue working collaboratively to strengthen media development, fact-checking mechanisms, professional standards in journalism, and citizens’ access to information. Discussions during the meeting also covered issues related to bilateral cooperation in education, information technology, artificial intelligence, and cyber security.

Members of the UNESCO delegation and relevant officials of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat were present on the occasion.
