Sylhet: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today announced that the government will soon initiate projects to improve road and rail connectivity on the Dhaka-Sylhet route, focusing on easing travel and enhancing regional economic activities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Prime Minister highlighted the current travel challenges due to the poor condition of the road, which extends the travel time to nearly 10 hours.
He recalled his promise during the election campaign to address these issues and assured that despite initial land acquisition and administrative hurdles, the concerned ministry has started taking necessary steps. The construction work is expected to commence soon and be completed within 2-3 years, ultimately resolving the travel inconveniences between Dhaka and Sylhet.
Addressing a civic rally at the Sylhet City Corporation's Nagar Bhaban premises, Tarique Rahman also launched a riverbank beautification and flood protection project along the Surma River. He emphasized the significance of enhancing rail transport, noting that expanding roads often leads to increased traffic and loss of agricultural land. A double-line railway initiative on the Sylhet-Dhaka route is also in the pipeline, promising cost-effective travel and goods transportation.
The Prime Minister touched upon healthcare improvements, revealing plans to emulate the UK's National Health Service model and recruit 100,000 health workers, predominantly women, to enhance rural healthcare outreach. Furthermore, a 250-bed hospital under Sylhet Medical College will soon be operational, with plans for expansion to 1,200 beds.
On industrial development, Rahman pledged to expand industries and create IT sector employment in Sylhet. He addressed local waterlogging issues, urging civic awareness and projects to prevent waste disposal in water systems. He also spoke of the 'Notun Kuri Sports' initiative aimed at discovering young athletic talent nationwide.
Highlighting the government's progress in its short tenure, Rahman mentioned initiatives like the Family Card, Krishi Card, and Sports Card, along with allowances for religious leaders. He conveyed his vision of transforming Bangladesh into a developed nation through collective effort and commitment.
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Expatriates' Welfare Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury, and others were present, supporting the Prime Minister's vision for national development.
