Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Monday sent Dr. Sudip Chakroborthy, an associate professor in the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at Dhaka University, to jail in connection with the alleged abetment of the suicide of department student Munira Mahjabin Mimo. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain issued the order after rejecting Chakroborthy’s bail petition.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Sub-Inspector Kazi Iqbal Hossain of Badda Police Station, who is the investigation officer of the case, urged the court to keep Chakroborthy in custody. In his plea, he mentioned that primary findings suggest the professor’s involvement in the incident, though the verification of his identity and address is ongoing. The investigation officer emphasized that detaining him is crucial for a fair investigation.

Police apprehended Sudip Chakroborthy from Uttar Badda on Sunday after Mimo was discovered hanging at her residence in the same locality. A note was found at the scene, allegedly indicating the teacher’s involvement in the tragedy. In light of the incident, Mimo’s father filed a case against Chakroborthy, accusing him of encouraging his daughter’s suicide.
