Narayanganj: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 has scheduled May 5 for delivering the order on the charge framing in a case involving crimes against humanity. The case targets former lawmaker Shamim Osman and 11 others for their alleged involvement in atrocities committed during the July Mass Uprising in Narayanganj.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the tribunal arrived at this decision following arguments from state-appointed defense counsels Md Ali Haider, Sheikh Mustavi Hasan, and Amir Hossain. They advocated for the discharge of their clients from the case. Notably, all the accused remain at large and are being tried in absentia, adding complexity to the judicial process.
The prosecution completed its hearing on April 19, presenting evidence against Shamim Osman and his associates. The charges allege their complicity in crimes that resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals in the Fatullah and Signboard areas of Narayanganj on July 19, 21, and August 5, 2024. The accused include Shamim's son Ayan Osman, nephew Azmeri Osman, Ayan's brother-in-law Minhaj Uddin Ahmed Diki, and Shamim's brother-in-law Tanvir Ahmed Titu, among others.
The formal charge was submitted by the prosecution on January 19, 2026. Following this, the tribunal took the charges into cognizance and issued arrest warrants for the accused. The upcoming decision on May 5 will be pivotal in determining the next steps in this high-profile case.
