Dhaka: The government is working to sign a deal with the US-based Boeing Company by April 30 to purchase 14 aircrafts, while planning to open Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport's (HSIA's) Third Terminal by year-end, State Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Millat said today. Millat disclosed this after receiving a briefing from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Millat shared that the Prime Minister has directed the authorities to ensure that the national flag carrier becomes a profitable entity. In addition to the Boeing deal, the government is considering leasing several aircrafts to enhance Biman Bangladesh Airlines services and boost its commercial performance.
Millat mentioned that the Third Terminal of HSIA is slated for inauguration either on December 16 this year or at the start of the New Year, with Japan set to handle its operations. Additionally, international flights from Cox's Bazar Airport are expected to commence within the next two to three months, subject to further decisions post the upcoming national budget.
The government is also exploring a Public-Private Partnership model to increase the profitability of tourist destinations. The meeting concluded with a decision to investigate past irregularities and corruption within Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
