Dhaka: Police have arrested two people in connection with an extortion attempt and a shooting incident at a garment factory in Kafrul area in the capital. The arrestees are Russell Molla, 35, and Ruman Talukdar, 26.
According to United News of Bangladesh, on April 18, when factory owner Kamrul Islam, 33, was working at his office in the garment factory, 12-13 unidentified miscreants entered the office forcibly and demanded Tk 1 crore, threatening to kill him if their demand was not met. At one stage, two of them pulled out pistols and fired two rounds. One bullet narrowly missed Kamrul’s left ear and struck the glass of a file cabinet behind him, shattering it, while the other hit the wall. A case was later filed with Kafrul Police Station over the incident.
N M Nasiruddin, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said on Tuesday afternoon that a team from Kafrul Police arrested Russell Molla in a raid in Mirpur-13 around 12:15 am on April 20 using intelligence and technological support. Ruman Talukdar was later arrested from an area under Savar Police Station at around 10:00 pm the same day.
Police said both arrestees have multiple cases against them including charges of extortion, narcotics, violence against women, theft, assault, and explosives-related offences, filed with different police stations including Kafrul and Bhashantek. Ruman Talukdar has given a confessional statement before a court. Police said drives are ongoing to arrest the other accused involved in the incident and to recover the firearm used in the attack.
