Mymensingh: A court here on Tuesday sentenced seven people, including four brothers, to death for killing a college student in Tarakanda upazila in 2021. Mymensingh District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Zakir Hossain also awarded seven years’ imprisonment to two women involved in the case.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the condemned convicts include Yunus Ali alias Yunus Ali, 62, and his brothers Mohammad Ali, 52, Golam Hossain alias Gulu, 51, and Shamsul Haque, 44, all sons of Jasim Uddin of Palashkanda Tanpara in the upazila. Additionally, Asif Rana Naim, 24, son of Golam Hossain, Abdul Helim, 51, son of Abdul Mannan, and Farid Ahmed alias Babu, 19, son of Mohammad Ali, were also sentenced to death. The court also imposed a fine of Tk 50,000 on each of these individuals.
The two women, Khaleda Akter, wife of Mohammad Ali, and Rehena Khatun, wife of Yunus Ali, received a fine of Tk 25,000 each. Should they fail to pay, they will face an additional year in prison.
The prosecution detailed that the victim, Shahinur Alam alias Iqbal, a student at the Rumdo Institute of Modern Technology (RIMT), went missing on May 31, 2021. His father, Abdur Rauf, subsequently lodged a general diary to report the disappearance. On June 5, 2021, police discovered Iqbal’s decomposed body in a septic tank at Palashkanda Tanpara village.
Following the discovery, the victim’s brother, Selim Mia, filed a murder case on June 6, 2021, accusing Asif Rana and his associates. This led to police filing a charge sheet against nine individuals in connection with the crime.
