Kushtia: Ten people, including a local leader of Swechchhasebak Dal, sustained bullet injuries in a gun attack at Mazdiyar in Doulatpur upazila of Kushtia district early Monday. The victims were identified as Rabiul Islam, 36, the convener of Moricha Union unit Swechchhasebak Dal, his father Hafez Pramanik, Sohel Rana, 45, Sohel's wife Toma Khatun, 26, Quamrul Islam, 37, Munni Khatun, 24, Runa Khatun, 27, Mita Khatun, 30, Touhidul Islam, 30, and Merinan Khatun, 25.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the incident occurred when Rabiul was walking in front of his house during a power outage. Witnesses reported that a group of 10 to 15 armed men suddenly attacked him. In response to his screams, his parents and neighbors rushed to the scene, only for the attackers to open fire indiscriminately, resulting in injuries to 10 individuals, including family members and locals.
Locals promptly rescued the injured and transported them to Kushtia General Hospital. Liaquat Member, Rabiul Islam's maternal uncle, told reporters at the hospital that the motive behind the attack was unknown, and the identities of the assailants could not be confirmed. He mentioned that Rabiul had no known disputes with anyone, making the attack unexpected.
Officer-in-Charge of Daulatpur Police Station Arifur Rahman stated that several rounds of gunshots were heard in Moricha union at night, resulting in injuries to 10 people. Police quickly arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control. Efforts are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible.
