Sundarbans: Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard arrested a leader of a robber gang along with arms and ammunition from the Sundarbans in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat district on Monday night. The arrestee was identified as Md Abdus Samad Molla, 35, who is the second-in-command of the notorious gang known as ‘Chhoto Sumon’.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the arrest was made following a tip-off, prompting a team from the Coast Guard to conduct a drive as part of their ongoing ‘Operation Mangrove Shield’ around 11 pm. The operation successfully led to the capture of Abdus Samad at Shukunda Bazar in Rampal upazila, as confirmed by Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, a media officer of the Coast Guard, on Tuesday.
Subsequent to the arrest, information provided by Abdus Samad enabled Coast Guard members to conduct another operation around 2:00 am on Tuesday in the Nandabala canal area of the Sundarbans under Mongla Police Station. This operation resulted in the recovery of one single-barrel gun, one air gun, and two rounds of live cartridges from the location.
Efforts like these are part of a broader strategy to rid the Sundarbans of pirate activities, ensuring safety and security in the region, Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon stated.
