Chattogram: A total of 32.5 lakh metres of illegal fishing nets, with an estimated market value of Tk 312 crore, were seized during a joint operation by the Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard in the Karnaphuli River area of Chattogram.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the operation was conducted in the Dangarchar area under the Karnaphuli Police Station. The authorities acted on secret information indicating that illegal nets had been stockpiled in the area. During the drive, law enforcement officials recovered a large quantity of banned nets from a godown named ‘Sea Heart’, with a fisheries officer present to oversee the process. Additional nets were also found in two abandoned trucks at the location.

At the conclusion of the operation, the illegal nets were destroyed under the supervision of the fisheries official. This drive is part of ongoing efforts to enforce the government’s 58-day fishing ban, which aims to prevent the catching of jhatka, and to protect the country’s fisheries resources.
