Dhaka: Special Metropolitan Magistrates of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) disposed of a total of 3,778 criminal cases and 1,742 traffic cases through summary trials in March last.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, DMP officials reported that a total of 6,863 individuals were arrested during the period, with 3,701 receiving sentences through summary court proceedings. Law Officer Mohammad Ataul Haque highlighted that the Motijheel Division of DMP arrested 920 individuals and filed 552 cases, resulting in fines of Tk 171,000 and the sentencing of 633 individuals.
The Tejgaon Division arrested 1,035 individuals in 550 cases, imposed fines amounting to Tk 161,900, and sentenced 389 individuals. The Wari Division arrested 662 individuals in 361 cases, collecting fines of Tk 387,200 and sentencing 251 individuals. Meanwhile, the Gulshan Division reported 468 arrests in 321 cases, with fines of Tk 88,800 and 120 individuals sentenced.
In Mirpur Division, 2,025 individuals were arrested in 1,017 cases, with fines totaling Tk 459,900 and 921 individuals sentenced. The Ramna Division arrested 690 individuals in 297 cases, imposed fines of Tk 17,000, and sentenced 583 individuals. Similarly, Lalbagh Division arrested 485 individuals in 323 cases, with fines of Tk 14,700 and 437 individuals sentenced. Uttara Division arrested 578 individuals in 357 cases, resulting in fines of Tk 253,100 and 367 individuals sentenced.
On the traffic front, DMP divisions including Motijheel, Tejgaon, Wari, Gulshan, Mirpur, Ramna, Lalbagh, and Uttara filed 914 cases in March. Along with 214 pending cases, a total of 1,742 traffic cases were disposed of, with fines amounting to Tk 318,700. The Motijheel Traffic Division disposed of 130 cases, fining Tk 35,500; Tejgaon handled 73 cases with fines of Tk 29,000; Wari processed 172 cases with fines of Tk 41,500; and Gulshan disposed of 94 cases with fines totaling Tk 23,500.
Additionally, Mirpur Traffic Division handled 121 cases with fines of Tk 38,500, Ramna disposed of 106 cases with Tk 61,000 in fines, Lalbagh processed 78 cases with Tk 28,700 in fines, and Uttara handled 140 cases, imposing fines of Tk 61,000. Officials noted that summary trials in the Special Metropolitan Magistrate courts are conducted under the Code of Criminal Procedure for minor offenses that warrant lighter punishments.
