Chuadanga: Chuadanga recorded the country’s highest temperature for the third consecutive day on Friday, with the mercury soaring to 39.7 degrees Celsius, causing extreme discomfort and disrupting daily life.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the district Met office reported that the temperature reached 39.7 degrees Celsius at 3:00pm, accompanied by a humidity level of 31%. Earlier in the day, temperatures were recorded at 37 degrees Celsius by noon. This follows previous temperature records of 36.3 degrees Celsius on April 1 and 38.5 degrees Celsius on April 2, indicating a steady increase as the season progresses.
A mild to moderate heat wave is currently sweeping through the district, leaving streets largely empty as residents opt to stay indoors unless necessary. Those who ventured outside were observed using umbrellas, hats, or cloth to shield themselves from the intense sunlight. Outdoor workers and day laborers are particularly struggling under the oppressive heat.
Reports from rickshaw and van drivers indicate a decline in passenger numbers, while field workers continue their tasks under the scorching sun, pausing periodically to seek refuge in the shade. The demand for cold drinks and sugarcane juice has surged throughout the town as residents seek relief from the searing temperatures.
Local watermelon vendor Abdul Alim expressed difficulty in conducting roadside business due to the extreme heat, while motorcyclist Rakib described the conditions as exhausting, especially during frequent power outages. Jaminur Rahman, in-charge of the Chuadanga First Class Weather Observatory, noted that the mild to moderate heat wave is likely to persist for several days, with no immediate sign of rainfall.
