Faridpur: A Faridpur tribunal on Monday convicted a man and sentenced him to jail until death for killing his wife by setting her on fire over dowry in 2020. Faridpur Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Shamima Parveen handed down the punishment.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the condemned convict is Rashed Molla, 30, of Ghoradah Bazar in Sadar upazila of the district. The tribunal also fined him Tk 50,000. Additionally, the court sentenced him to three years of imprisonment and fined him Tk 10,000 under another section of the case, with a default provision to suffer one additional year in jail.
The prosecution detailed that Rashed married Jotsna Begum, 21, daughter of Syed Matubbar of Dangi village in Sadar upazila, in 2019. Since their marriage, Rashed reportedly pressured his in-laws for dowry. Jotsna’s family initially provided Tk 50,000 to Rashed, who also acquired more money by selling Jotsna’s gold jewelry.
On July 16, 2020, Rashed demanded another Tk 50,000 as dowry. When Jotsna was unable to meet this demand, an altercation ensued between them. During the dispute, he poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
Jotsna was first taken to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital and later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to her critical condition, but she died on the way to the hospital the following day. Jalil Sheikh, Jotsna’s elder brother, subsequently filed a murder case with Faridpur Kotwali Police Station.
