Dhaka: Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain today announced that the government is taking steps to procure measles vaccines from UNICEF. This decision comes in response to the increasing measles infections within the country, as the Health Ministry prioritizes rapid medical treatment.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the government has allocated Tk 604 crore for vaccine procurement to combat the rising number of measles cases. Sakhawat briefed reporters after his meeting with the US ambassador in the ministry’s conference room at the secretariat. He confirmed that UNICEF will supply the vaccines, with deliveries anticipated to begin in the first week of April.

The Health Minister emphasized ongoing preparations to establish Intensive Care Units on an emergency basis, along with the supply of ventilators and the setup of specialized wards. He highlighted the prompt reopening of an ICU unit in Mohakhali, which had been closed temporarily following the death of a child, within 18 hours.

Sakhawat further explained that separate wards, isolation facilities, and ventilators have been arranged for children in multiple locations, including the capital. New ventilators have been dispatched to Manikganj and Rajshahi, with plans underway to procure an additional 20 ventilators.

He noted that while routine vaccination programs have persisted over the past decade, no significant measles vaccination campaign has occurred since 2018. Consequently, infections are more prevalent among unvaccinated children or those born after the last major campaign.

Urging the public to remain vigilant, Sakhawat assured that measures are being taken to address the situation. He encouraged people to stay calm and ensure their children receive vaccinations, which will be made available promptly upon arrival.

Health Secretary Md. Kamruzzaman Chowdhury added that the government has already paid UNICEF for the vaccines. Following approval from the Purchase Committee, the order will be placed, and supplies are expected from the first week of April. The nationwide vaccination program will be strengthened as soon as the vaccines are received.

Additionally, the vaccination committee plans to initiate a special campaign targeting children aged six months to five years, prioritizing their healthcare needs.
