Dhaka: Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir addressed Parliament, revealing that significant corruption occurred under the guise of development during the previous fascist regime. Fakhrul stated that after assuming power a month ago, it became apparent that mega projects were riddled with corruption, which was highlighted during a question-and-answer session with opposition lawmaker Akhter Hossen from Rangpur-4.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Minister expressed disappointment that even officials from the interim government misappropriated funds for personal gain, while infrastructure in the northern region was neglected. Fakhrul assured Parliament that the current administration is committed to eradicating such corruption and prioritizing rural roads and communication systems.
During the session, NCP lawmaker Aktar Hossain raised concerns about the neglect of rural roads, which has adversely affected local communities. He questioned whether the current government would address these issues. In response, Fakhrul Islam emphasized that the previous government's corruption and nepotism hampered rural road development. He announced that the government has initiated plans to upgrade these roads in phases, aiming to improve infrastructure and connectivity for rural areas.
In a supplementary question from Jamaat lawmaker Md Abdul Aleem of Bagerhat-4, the LGRD Minister reiterated the commitment to paving earthen roads. Fakhrul Islam's statements underscore the government's focus on transparent governance and infrastructure development in pursuit of a democratic and prosperous Bangladesh under Tarique Rahman's leadership.
