Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Independence and National Day was observed in Toronto with fervor and festivity, as the Consulate General organized a series of day-long programs and a reception attended by members of the Bangladeshi community.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the celebrations began on Thursday at the Bangladesh House premises with the hoisting of the national flag by Consul General Md Shah Alom Khokon. This was followed by the reading of messages from the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and State Minister for Foreign Affairs. A reception was later held at a local conference venue, drawing prominent members of the Bangladeshi community from the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.

During the event, the consul general paid tribute to martyrs, freedom fighters, and women who sacrificed for the country’s independence. He also honored Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the proclaimer of independence, and praised former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia for her role in the struggle for democracy. Emphasizing the ‘Bangladesh First’ foreign policy, he urged collective support in building a modern and just nation.

The consul general expressed satisfaction with Bangladesh-Canada relations, noting that bilateral ties have reached new heights. He highlighted several consular initiatives and diaspora engagement programs under the motto ‘Community First.’ He also referred to Bangladesh’s candidature for the Presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, seeking international support and expressing optimism about contributing to global peace, cooperation, and sustainable development.

The evening program included a documentary screening on the Liberation War, a cake-cutting ceremony, and traditional Bangladeshi cuisine. As part of the 55th anniversary celebrations, the Consulate General plans to host another reception on April 2, honoring the consular corps in Toronto.
