Khulna: The Great Independence and National Day was observed in Khulna today with due respect and solemnity, paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War. The day began with the laying of wreaths at the Gallamari Martyrs’ Memorial at sunrise.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a 31-gun salute marked the ceremonial start of the day in the early hours at Khulna Metropolitan Police Lines. National flags were hoisted atop government, semi-government, autonomous, and private buildings, while major roads and islands of the city were adorned with national flags. Wreaths were placed at the memorial by Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Khulna city and district units, Divisional Commissioner Md. Mokhtar Ahmed, KCC Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju, Range DIG Md. Rezaul Haque, KMP Police Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Hasan, Deputy Commissioner A.S.M. Jamshad Khondker, Superintendent of Police, and representatives from various government offices, political parties, professional bodies, and socio-cultural organisations.
At 8:30 am, the national flag was formally hoisted at Khulna District Stadium by the divisional commissioner. A parade and assembly involving police, Ansar-VDP, BNCC, Fire Service and Civil Defence, prison guards, and students from educational institutions were held, followed by prize distribution. The Khulna City Corporation organised children’s art and essay competitions, discussion sessions, and a prize-giving ceremony at the city building. Documentary films on the Liberation War were screened at Shaheed Hadis Park, arranged by the Regional Information Office (PID).
Later, a reception was accorded to freedom fighters and family members of martyrs at the district Shilpokola Academy auditorium. Speaking as the chief guest, the divisional commissioner described the freedom fighters as the ‘sun sons of the nation,’ emphasising their sacrifices for independence and the nation’s commitment to honouring them. Special prayers were offered at mosques, temples, churches, pagodas, and other places of worship seeking peace and progress for the nation. Improved diets were served at hospitals, jails, orphanages, and welfare centres.
War-based films were screened at cinema halls and open spaces. Important buildings were illuminated, while sports competitions were held across educational institutions. Parks and the divisional museum were opened free for children. Bangladesh Betar broadcast special programmes, and local newspapers published supplements marking the day. Meanwhile, different sociocultural and political parties, including BNP, observed elaborate programmes to mark the day. Khulna University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Mongla Port Authority (MPA), West Zone Power Company Ltd, Khulna Press Club, Metropolitan Journalists Union, Khulna Journalists Union, and different educational institutions also observed elaborate programmes on the day.
