Eastern bank: Eastern Bank PLC has honoured environmental activist Shakhawat Ullah, popularly known as Brikkhoshokha, in recognition of his contributions to nationwide tree plantation and environmental conservation.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Eastern Bank's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ali Reza Iftekhar, presented the honour at a ceremony held at the bank's corporate headquarters in Gulshan. The recognition was part of the bank's initiative titled 'EBL Mission Bangladesh Returns 2025', which aims to acknowledge individuals contributing to societal and environmental advancements. This year, four individuals received honours under this initiative.
Over the past eight years, Shakhawat Ullah has planted more than 180,000 trees across 35 districts in Bangladesh. His efforts are supported by a network of over 400 young volunteers nationwide. Beyond tree planting, he is also dedicated to protecting endangered tree species, conserving rare plants, and raising awareness about river and bird conservation.
Shakhawat Ullah initiated his environmental efforts formally in 2018 by planting 100 Krishnachura trees, which evolved into a comprehensive nationwide programme. A pivotal moment came in 2020, following an accident while collecting tree saplings, prompting him to intensify his environmental efforts. To support his initiatives, he established the Chandrakali Foundation, which aims to plant one million more trees across Bangladesh by 2030. Shakhawat Ullah is also an employee at Berlo Communications Ltd.
